Lego Engineering 2

Building on their knowledge of mechanical advantage from Lego Engineering 1, this class adds motors to the models so we can investigate the tradeoffs between speed and torque plus how to use gears and special lego parts to change the direction of motion.

NOTE: Although Lego Engineering 1 is helpful so they have a basic understanding of gears, it is not a prerequisite for this course.

This course is typically offered during winter term for 2nd/3rd graders in Sherwood.

Speed vs Torque

  • Learn how to increase/decrease speed of a motor
  • Discover the tradeoff between going fast and having power

Changing Motion

  • Build mechanisms that change circular motion (eg. spinning motor) to linear motion

Gears

  • Meshed gears turn in opposite directions
  • A large gear turns a small gear faster
  • A small gear turns a large gear slowly.
